How Do They Compare?
IN THE BLUE CORNER: THE VETERAN
Eragon
By Christopher Paolini.
Eragon is just a poor farm boy who finds a mysterious blue rock in the forest. After taking the rock home he finds out it is not a rock at all when a dragon hatches from the blue shell and changes his life, forever. Unknown to him, his father is really his uncle. His Father/uncle gets killed by the Ra'zac who was searching for Eragon. Taking his dragon, Eragon decides to hunt down the Ra'zac and kill them in revenge but before he leaves, he fatefully bumps into Brom, an old storyteller from the village who turns out to be more than a storyteller. Brom mentors him in the ways of a Dragon Rider. Eragon, thrust into a world of revenge and destiny has to figure out who he is and ultimately becomes the hero.
IN THE RED CORNER: THE CHALLENGER
Bacon Finnegan and the Relics of Merlin
Book One: The Sword of Elements
By T. A. Northburg
Bacon Finnegan just found a teleportation watch that transports him from the Starship Ruby Darton to the planet of his destiny. He meets up with a White Witch who explains he is Merlin's lost grandson and unleashes his magical powers. Bacon embarks on his quest to find seven hidden magical relics. Before he can do that, he must rescue his friends and defeat an evil Warlock, who is out to kill him. Then if he is successful, he can complete his quest to find the remaining relics and release Merlin from his enchantment on Earth.
THE COMPARISON
Like Eragon, Bacon Finnegan is a young boy who had a boring nonexistent life before a fateful event sent him on a great journey. There are many similarities between the two books. They are both rooted in legacy. Eragon finds out he is a Dragon Rider while Bacon finds out that he is the descendent of Merlin. They embark on a great quest, grapple with evil and have to make decisions that will affect the rest of their lives. Their format is similar. The use of shorter chapters keeps the reader moving through the story quickly, building suspense and choreographing great action scenes.
