How Do You Set Goals?

We all have different tactics for setting goals in the New Year.

What do you do?

Do you jot them down on the back of a napkin?

Do you scratch them out on a sheet of paper?

Do you have a worksheet you use?

Do you set goals in a workbook?

Do you have a computer program you use?

Do you set them in your mind and hope they come true?

Whatever you do, make sure that you write them down this year and look at them daily or weekly. A goal is not any good if you aren't keeping track of what you want.

Goal Setting Ritual

Some people have a certain ritual they go through. I always take the last two days of the year to formulate my goals and write them out on a workbook I created and used since 1996. In the beginning of December, I look at my workbook from last year and see how many goals I accomplished. I then start to think of the things I want to do in the coming year.

During those two days I analyze myself and the different areas of my life. I then think of pertinent goals in all areas and write them down. (This can take several hours, depending on how much pre-thought you have put into your goals.)

Really dedicate some time this year to setting meaningful goals in your life.

Goal Setting Workbook

This past year it was a goal of mine to put the activities I did, on a yearly basis, into a goal setting workbook and self publish it. I looked at my goal daily and finally I accomplished it. I self published my book on CreateSpace, a part of Amazon.com and now have the ability to share my goal setting exercises with you.

There are six aspects to the workbook.

YOUR PURPOSE

First, ask yourself some questions that allow you to analyze your life and where you have been. What qualities do you have? What do you admire in others? If you don't know where you are, you won't know to get where you are going. It is important to know your qualities--they will help you move forward.

SUCCESS

Second, put together a definition of success. Success means different things to different people. It is important for you to know what success in your life looks like and what it means to you. Goal setting and success go hand in hand.

CORE GOAL UNITS

Third, take a look a the different areas in your life; mind, body, money, social life, relationships, belief, and family. Rate your goal units and how satisfied you are in these areas of your life. Also, prioritize them and figure out which areas you want to work on the most.

SHORT-TERM GOAL SETTING

Fourth, work on short-term goal setting exercises of the eight core goal units. This is where it gets down to the nitty-gritty and you actually set specific, measurable, and timely goals for each core goal unit.

LONG-TERM GOAL SETTING

Fifth, do a short writing activities for your long-term vision of your life. This is where you can get wild and creative. What does your life look like 5, 10, 15 years from now?

TAKE ACTION

Lastly, take action! No goal is good if you don't take action towards achieving it. Also, overcome the barriers that may be holding you back from reaching your goals.

Take The First Step

Set Goals. It makes no difference if you write them down on a napkin, jot them down on a sheet of paper, follow a worksheet, workbook, or online computer tracking program--SET YOUR GOALS!

Take The Second Step

If you are looking for a workbook to take you through all six of these stages, order my book, FUEL THE FURNACE WORKBOOK.

It's easy to set goals but harder to accomplish them. What works for me is making short term goals and then creating long term goals that can be completed alongside them.
