How Do They Compare?

IN THE BLUE CORNER: THE VETERAN

The Lightning Thief

Percy Jackson and the Olympians

By Rick Riordan

Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson’s life has been far from normal. Moving from one boarding school to another, he finds himself kicked out of another one. However, his life is about to get interesting. When on summer break, his mother takes him on a short trip to Montauk. That night, when a huge thunderstorm rolls in, monsters chase them, and Percy finds himself fighting a giant Minotaur. Defeating the Minotaur, but losing his mother, Percy finds himself at CampHalf-Blood and learns that his father is Poseidon, one of the Greek Gods. There he makes new friends and finds new enemies. After talking with the Oracle, he is sent on a quest to retrieve Zeus’s missing thunderbolt, which he is accused of stealing. Percy Jackson’s quest to the underworld and MountOlympus is full of Greek mythology and brilliantly mixed with the modern day adventure. School Library Journal calls it, “An adventure quest with a hip edge.”

IN THE RED CORNER: THE CHALLENGER

Bacon Finnegan and the Relics of Merlin

Book One: The Sword of Elements

By T. A. Northburg

Bacon Finnegan just found a teleportation watch that transports him from the Starship Ruby Darton to the planet of his destiny. He meets up with a White Witch who explains he is Merlin's lost grandson and unleashes his magical powers. Bacon embarks on his quest to find seven hidden magical relics. Before he can do that, he must rescue his friends and defeat an evil Warlock, who is out to kill him. Then if he is successful, he can complete his quest to find the remaining relics and release Merlin from his enchantment on Earth.

THE COMPARISON

These two stories have many similarities. Percy Jackson is the son of a Greek God and has special powers. Bacon Finnegan is Merlin’s grandson and is a supernatural being. Percy is sent on a quest that is worthy of a god’s son, and Bacon is sent on a quest that is legendary. They both have themes of friendship, betrayal, family and love interwoven within a grand adventure. However, there are many differences. Percy Jackson’s world is our very own, in our current time. Bacon’s adventure takes place years in the future, on distant planets. Both are filled with mythical creatures and dangerous perils.
